Madda Studio works closely with weavers in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, where weaving has been part of the culture for centuries. Each one-of-a-kind rug is woven on traditional looms with a cotton warp and hand-spun wool from Chiapas in the weft. The wool used is remnants and overage from other projects as part of their process to reduce waste. The result is a rustic flat woven rug with texture and dimension that is also soft to the touch and thicker than you would expect. The dyes used are made from plants and insects from around Oaxaca and colors are built up through successive dye baths that produce beautiful variation in the yarns. Each rug is woven in a way that emphasizes—rather than conceals—this variation. The collection is a testament to the skill and knowledge of the people of the Oaxacan region. Available exclusively at Heath.

John ★★★★★

The natural wool smell still lingers pleasantly a week later, and I love how the slight unevenness of the hand-spun yarn gives each row its own quiet character.

James ★★★★★

Brought it home and the hand-woven texture instantly made the room feel cozier. The natural cotton warp gives it a nice, even finish underneath.

Claire ★★★★★

The handwoven texture is unmistakable — you can see the uneven warp threads and feel how tightly the cotton base holds the wool. It’s a true one-of-a-kind piece, and the traditional loom work from Oaxaca gives my living room a warm, artisanal character that mass-made rugs just don’t have.
